Buy a vowel? The Unpronounceable Bundle

A beautiful sunny day on the Atlantic beach in Boston got us into a whimsical mood. How about a quiz for you and friends about pronouncing Croatian words, whether winery names or varieties? Croatian words are pronounced as they are spelled… with some assistance from the graphic above.

To help you practice, we created The Unpronounceable Bundle at a discount of 15%.

• Crvik Blasius – grape Dubrovačka Malvasija – the Crvik family has had its vineyards in Konavle for several hundred years. Enough to remember selling their Dubrovačka Malvasija to the Ottomans, who were buying it as a “medicine.” Try their amber version which is served in top restaurants in Dubrovnik.
• Damjanić Borgonja – from Fuškulin, near Poreč, the Damjanić family excels in producing this light red wine, perfect for pairing with tuna crudo or light pasta. Served in many Istrian restaurants.
• Delmati Biokovo White – grape Trbljan, the winery is in the town of Vrgorac.  A very light white wine, perfect for sipping by the pool or pairing with light seafood dishes.
• Hazdovac Zlatna Melita – based on Kuljenača, a white variety indigenous to the island of Mljet. This wine is slightly oxidative and pairs with a wide variety of food.
• Hazdovac Meleda – grape Mrkuša, an indigenous red from the island of Mljet. While the island is famous for the legend of the Odysseus cave, and most recently a major finding of gold on a shipwreck, this variety is similar to Plavac Mali, but hard to pronounce even for Croatians.
• Franković Luna Blanca Muškat Momjanski – we close this list with a dessert wine made from the grape Muškat Momjanski by the Franković family in Istria. They tried to make the name easier by adding an Italian name. Do you think they succeeded? This is a white dessert wine with a phenomenal aroma, perfect for pairing with fruit desserts.
